Coachella Valley Experiences Haboob

WELCOME TO THE MONSOONS! At approximately 2AM Saturday morning the Coachella Valley experienced a Haboob caused by severe weather passing through the region. Although the Coachella Valley didn’t experience any precipitation, communities to the south and east of the valley experienced significant rainfall. According to Chief Meteorologist Ginger Jeffries, these downpours were the catalyst for our local weather event. Ginger says, "Think of it as wiping a dusty table with a wet paper towel." Dust will linger in the valley for the remainder of the day, clearing out once the sun goes down. KMIR.com will have updates throughout the day. Tune in to the KMIR News at 5PM for your latest forcast and a look a the remainder of the week. What’s a Haboob? – A haboob (Arabic: habub "blasting/drafting") is a type of intense dust storm carried on an atmospheric gravity current, also known as a weather front. Haboobs occur regularly in arid regions throughout the world.
