Friday Night Lights: High School Football Scores (09/23/16)
The opening night of DVL play proved to offer excitement for many of our local valley teams. Palm Desert 25, Xavier Prep 31: It’s one thing to open league play, but to do so with one of the desert’s top rivalries made this a memorable night. Mason Sarna, who earned our My Thai Player of the Week honors, finished with 4 total touchdowns. 2 on defense after interceptions and 2 long offensive touchdowns. The Saints offense seems to be rolling, while the Aztecs offense scored it’s first points in 3 weeks heading into league play. The Aztecs are at Shadow Hills next week while Xavier is at Cathedral City. Palm Springs 21, Indio 7: The defending DVL champs moved to 3-2 on the season after a win at Indio. Jeremy Dotson scored twice and the Indians defense halted the Rajahs early scoring from Dimitri Long. The Indians face La Quinta in the annual Mike Gates rivalry game while Indio has it’s bye. Shadow Hills 27, Cathedral City 21: The Knights got off to a commanding lead in their first DVL game, with Seth Morales throwing 2 scores to JD Lang who also added another rushing touchdown. The Lions roared back (see what we did there) behind 2 Jordan Wallace rushing scores, but the comeback felling short. It’s Homecoming for the Knights against Palm Desert next week while the Lions host Xavier. La Quinta 21, Roosevelt 27 (OT): A close, heartbreaking road loss for the Blackhawks. They took a 21-7 lead into the 4th quarter, but the Mustangs tied the game and scored in overtime, handing La Quinta it’s third loss before heading into their league docket next week at Palm Springs. Beaumont 19, Desert Hot Springs 0: The Golden Eagles offense couldn’t find a rhythm as they look for their first win of the season. Next week is a bye week where they’ll spend time doing community service as a team. Coachella Valley 20, Rubidoux 55: Football 101: The best way to slow a hot offense, don’t let them on the field. The Falcons ran the ball and ran the ball some more, keeping that high-flying Arabs offense on the sidelines. CV is off next week before beginning De Anza League play. Desert Mirage 0, Calexico 45: The Rams struggles continue as they headed south on Highway 111 to face the Bulldogs. They’re off next week as well.
