The Indio Police Department announced the establishment of a citizens’ board aimed at strengthening ties between the community and law enforcement.
Applications are being accepted for the Chief’s Advisory Board, which will discuss issues affecting the community as well as national law enforcement related issues such as racial profiling, use of force and accountability.
The board will report its findings to Indio police Chief Michael Washburn, according to Sgt. Daniel Marshall.
He said the establishment of the board is an extension of the department’s recognition earlier this year by the U.S. Department of Justice as one of 15 law enforcement agencies tasked with implementing recommendations from the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. Among the task force’s key areas of interest are building trust and legitimacy with community members.
Marshall said the size of the board will be dependent on the number of applicants, but it should be large enough to get “a good cross-section of the community.”
