Electrical Fire at Thermal School Leaves Person Trapped in Elevator

An electrical fire Wednesday at a Thermal school caused an elevator to fail, leaving a rider trapped and in need of rescue by firefighters.

The blaze at Toro Canyon Middle School in the 86000 block of Avenue 66 was reported about 2:50 p.m. in a utility room, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

About 15 firefighters, were sent to the location and quickly contained the blaze, which did not spread beyond the room.

The power was cut to the entire building because of the flames, causing an elevator to stop midway, according to the fire department.

Crews had to maneuver into the elevator shaft and use tools to pry the victim out. The rider, whose name was not disclosed, was freed by 4:20 p.m. and did not require medical attention.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
