Derrame de más de 3 mil barriles de petróleo daña costa del sur de California
Más de 3 mil barriles de petróleo se derramaron en una franja de la costa sur de California durante este fin de semana devastando parte de la vida silvestre y provocando la muerte de aves y peces.
Las autoridades han calificado este derrame de petróleo como un “impacto significativo para la vida silvestre”, siendo uno de los más graves registrados en los últimos siete años en el estado, detalla Univision.
De acuerdo con CNN, un brillo de aceite en el mar se reportó por primera vez a la Guardia Costera alrededor de las 9 a.m. de la mañana del sábado por parte de empleados de Amplify Energy, compañía de petróleo y gas propietaria del oleoducto.

El derrame, equivalente a unos 126 mil galones de crudo de posproducción, es un “desastre ecológico potencial”, dijo el sábado la alcaldesa de Huntington Beach, Kim Carr.
Katrina Foley, supervisora del condado de Orange, informó el domingo que el derrame se produjo de la ruptura en una tubería a unas 5 millas de la costa de Huntington Beach, en donde se han empezado a encontrar pájaros y peces muertos en la orilla de la playa.
Por su parte, Martyn Willsher, presidente y director ejecutivo Amplify Energy, informó este domingo que el derrame ya fue contenido y no esperan que se filtren más galones de petróleo porque esa es la capacidad máxima de la instalación.
Sin embargo, Willsher dijo que todavía están tratando de determinar dónde ocurrió la filtración.
Un total de 1,218 galones de mezcla de agua aceitosa se recuperaron del derrame, según informó la Guardia Costera en un comunicado.

“Esta respuesta es actualmente una operación 24 horas al día, 7 días a la semana y los esfuerzos de respuesta están programados para continuar hasta que los funcionarios federales y estatales determinen que la respuesta al derrame de petróleo crudo está completa”, dijo la USCG, por sus siglas en inglés, en un comunicado.
La Guardia Costera ha clasificado la situación como un gran derrame de petróleo, dijo el jefe de seguridad marina de Huntington Beach, Eric McCoy, a CNN.
La columna de la mancha de petróleo mide aproximadamente 5.8 millas náuticas de largo y se extiende desde el muelle de Huntington Beach hasta Newport Beach, explicaron las autoridades.
“El petróleo ya se ha infiltrado en muchos de nuestros humedales en Huntington Beach en el área de Talbert, y queremos hacer todo lo posible para evitar que se inmiscuya aún más en esa área”, dijo Foley.

Las autoridades locales están construyendo un terraplén de arena para proteger el Canal Talbert del derrame de petróleo y han alentado a los visitantes mantenerse alejados de las áreas de Santa Ana River Trail, Talbert Park y Talbert Marsh, así como las playas en las áreas impactadas.
Los funcionarios locales también han hecho un llamado a la población para que no entren a las zonas contaminadas intentando ayudar. Por ahora, llamar al 1-877-823-6926 es la mejor opción en caso de ver animales cubiertos de petróleo. La alcaldesa Kim Carr advirtió que las playas de la ciudad podrían estar cerradas durante semanas o incluso meses, de acuerdo con Univision. Este se trata de un impacto ecológico significativo para la playa y los humedales de Huntington Beach.
