Palm Springs Fire Department Invests in Preventative Health Screenings for First Responders
The Palm Springs Fire Department is taking proactive steps to safeguard the health of its first responders with a new program for preventative health screenings. Funded by the Palm Springs City Council, the screenings offer a comprehensive approach to firefighter wellness, focusing on both physical and mental health. "We’re really prioritizing the health of our employees, especially those who face more stress and trauma than most," said a representative from the Palm Springs Fire Department. The screenings include a 12-lead EKG, stress tests, VO2 testing, full-body ultrasounds, lab work, vision and hearing tests, and behavioral assessments. These screenings not only support the physical health of firefighters but also aim to save taxpayer money by preventing future health issues that could result in costly worker's compensation claims. The program helps identify potential health risks early, ensuring firefighters stay healthy throughout their careers and reducing the financial burden of long-term injuries. This small investment in preventative care will ultimately save taxpayers in the long run, with the cost of screening the entire department being less than a single injury claim. The screenings reflect the city's commitment to the well-being of its dedicated first responders.
