Riverside County Animal Services Criticized Over Shelter Practices Amid Protests
Animal advocates recently staged a protest outside Supervisor Manny Perez's office, voicing frustration over ongoing issues within Riverside County's animal shelters. Protesters claim animals entering the shelters face grim outcomes, with many alleging the facilities function more as "death rows" than safe havens. For years, advocates have sought intervention from Supervisor Perez, but critics argue he lacks expertise in animal welfare. "He’s not an animal expert, and I don’t think he knows what to do," one protester stated. Instead, advocates are pointing blame at County CEO Jeff Van Wagon. Van Wagon’s leadership has faced scrutiny for hiring former shelter director Erin Gettis, whose background in parks and recreation sparked concerns about her qualifications. Following public backlash and a lawsuit demanding her removal, Gettis received a controversial promotion before ultimately departing. The county then paid $2.5 million to a consultant, Kristin Hasson, also with a background in parks systems, to develop solutions. Hasson’s recommendation to leave stray animals on the streets, critics argue, underscores a lack of effective leadership. Protesters suggest the funds could have been used to improve shelter conditions, purchase blankets, and expand spay-and-neuter programs to address overpopulation. As frustration mounts, the community continues to demand accountability and meaningful reform to save Riverside County’s vulnerable animals.
