Washington Restaurants Offer Free Thanksgiving Meals to Build Community
In Spokane, Washington, restaurants like Ponderosa Bar and Grill and Fresh Soul are embracing the spirit of Thanksgiving by offering free meals to those who might otherwise spend the holiday alone. Vance Emerson, co-owner of Ponderosa, recalls how this tradition began in 2005 as a way to bring people together. "We’re here for everybody," Emerson shared, emphasizing the lasting impact on the community. He fondly remembers instances where people have expressed gratitude, such as a woman who once told him, "I wouldn’t have had a Christmas without you." Across town, Michael C. Brown, owner of Fresh Soul, has seen a similar outpouring of appreciation. Last year, Fresh Soul served 375 Thanksgiving meals, and this year, they aim to serve 500, with hopes of eventually reaching 1,000. Brown believes the act of giving without expecting anything in return embodies the true meaning of service. This effort comes as a new Pew Research survey highlights evolving Thanksgiving plans: while most Americans gather at home, 3% opt for public places like restaurants. For many, these meals are about more than food—they offer a sense of community and belonging during the holidays. Both restaurants invite everyone, regardless of circumstances, to join in their tradition, ensuring that no one feels alone during the season of gratitude. These efforts truly showcase the heart of Thanksgiving in Spokane.
