Holiday Package Theft on the Rise: How to Protect Your Deliveries
The holiday season brings cheer and gift-giving, but also a rise in package theft. Known as "porch piracy," this crime affects millions of households annually. Last year alone, an estimated 120.5 million packages were stolen, according to security firm Safewise. Dr. Ben Stickle, a criminologist studying package theft, notes that as the volume and value of deliveries increase, so does the risk. In many states, once a package is delivered to your property, it becomes your responsibility. While some retailers offer replacements or refunds, they aren’t obligated to do so. A survey revealed that 25% of theft victims didn’t receive any reimbursement. To combat this growing issue, companies are enhancing delivery options. Amazon Prime members, for instance, can opt for garage or locker deliveries. UPS employs artificial intelligence to redirect vulnerable shipments to secure locations. Doorbell cameras have also surged in popularity, but they don’t always deter thieves. For added peace of mind, new insurance plans, such as Porch Pals, offer theft protection. For $120 annually, the service covers up to three claims totaling $2,000. Founder James Moore explains, "You won’t have to worry if a package gets stolen." Experts suggest proactive measures to protect your deliveries: Track your packages and ensure you’re home during delivery. Require a signature for drop-offs. Pick up packages from the store to avoid leaving them on your porch. By taking these precautions, you can outsmart the grinches and keep your gifts safe this holiday season. Stay vigilant, and don’t let porch pirates steal your joy!
