Coachella Valley Animal Commission Meeting Draws Attention Amid Controversy
The Coachella Valley Animal Commission meeting in 1000 Palms is drawing attention as animal advocates and residents seek answers and action on pressing issues. The meeting, which was originally canceled last week due to concerns over commissioner attendance, was reinstated after receiving numerous complaints. While most commissioners were present, some left early, sparking further discussion among attendees. A key topic of focus has been the absence of CEO Jeff Van Wagenen, known for his involvement in past meetings. His absence follows a recent lawsuit seeking repayment of hundreds of thousands of dollars for alleged mismanagement in hiring practices within the animal services department. This lawsuit also highlighted a $2.5 million contract awarded to Christen Ha, owner of Outcomes for Pet, who was in attendance and expected to speak. Attendees voiced strong opinions about the need for the county to cancel the contract and increase efforts in spay and neuter services. Under current county law, all animals must be spayed or neutered unless they have a breeding license. However, the majority of animals adopted or fostered from the Coachella Valley Animal Campus are not being brought back for these procedures, creating an ongoing challenge. Residents and advocates called for more affordable spay and neuter services to address the issue, as well as accountability for Van Wagenen and Supervisor Manny Perez. While the commission has made some strides, such as extending its hours on Wednesdays to 7 p.m. for working residents, advocates argue that these steps are insufficient. Mary Strong will provide a full recap of the meeting in the 6 p.m. news tonight.
