Another Crash on Palm Drive Fuels Safety Concerns in Desert Hot Springs

Another crash on Palm Drive in Desert Hot Springs has heightened safety concerns for residents. The crash, which occurred near the intersection of 20th Avenue, shut down a section of the road as patients were seen receiving aid at the scene. The extent of their injuries remains unknown, and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating. This marks the fourth accident on Palm Drive within a week, two of which were fatal. Desert Hot Springs Police Chief Jim Henson confirmed that enforcement will be increasing in response to the troubling trend. "Because of the rise in accidents, we’ve stepped up traffic enforcement along Palm Drive," said Chief Henson. "Officers are conducting extra patrols, funded through grant money, to focus on speeding and unsafe driving." Residents have expressed fear and frustration about the situation. Nancy, a longtime resident, described the dangers of navigating Palm Drive, where drivers routinely exceed speed limits of 45-55 mph, often reaching 70-80 mph. In addition to increased enforcement, the city is finalizing plans for a comprehensive revitalization project for Palm Drive. The project, set to begin in spring 2025, includes road rehabilitation, new sidewalks, gutters, curbs, over 130 new streetlights, and a long-awaited traffic light at the intersection of Palm Drive and 20th Avenue. "We’re at the bookend of a major revitalization project," Chief Henson explained. "The goal is to ensure residents' safety while we complete these critical improvements." Residents are urged to obey traffic laws, slow down, and prioritize safety. Special traffic enforcement efforts will continue through the new year as the city works to mitigate the dangers on Palm Drive.
