Historic Plaza Theatre Renovation Faces Conflict with Kalura Trattoria Over Patio Space
The restoration project for the historic Plaza Theatre in Palm Springs is progressing, but it has sparked a contentious debate with Kalura Trattoria, a long-standing Italian restaurant nearby. The city cites a need to widen the current 10-foot easement to 20 feet for public safety compliance, a change that would affect Kalura Trattoria's patio space. Ignazio Battaglia, the owner of Kalura Trattoria, expressed concern over the impact of the proposed changes. "Moving the patio will devastate our family business and jeopardize the 18 families that rely on us," Battaglia said. He estimates that the changes could result in a 30-35% loss in revenue, leading to potential layoffs. The city, which acquired the Plaza Theatre in 2015, aims to keep the renovation project on track for completion by late 2025. Palm Springs City Attorney Jeffrey Ballinger stated, "This resolution of necessity is a backstop to ongoing negotiations." City officials have offered to relocate the restaurant's patio to an alternative space along the street, but Battaglia argues that such a move would strip the restaurant of its character and hurt customer response. The restaurant has started a petition to oppose the changes and urges the city to seek a fair compromise. "We’re willing to work together for the theatre, but the city has to compromise as well," Battaglia added. Negotiations between the city, property owner Grit Development, and Kalura Trattoria are ongoing. Meanwhile, the city emphasizes that eminent domain would only be used as a last resort. Kalura Trattoria vows to continue fighting for its patio space as discussions progress.
