FTC Reports Record Surge in Online Task Scams, Losses Exceed $220 Million in 2024
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a warning about a dramatic rise in online task scams in the first half of 2024. Financial losses from these scams have surpassed $220 million, with online task scams making up approximately 40% of all reported job scams. These scams often present themselves as easy, well-paying online tasks, such as interacting with social media posts or reviewing restaurants. Scammers promise commissions for completing simple tasks, but victims often receive no payment. In some cases, scammers ask for upfront deposits, which are never refunded. The FTC reports that 20,000 people filed complaints in the first half of 2024, a significant increase from just 5,000 complaints in all of 2023.
