Drone Mystery in the Northeast: 5,000 Sightings Spark Federal Action

Authorities in New York and New Jersey are on high alert as they grapple with a growing number of drone sightings, triggering federal investigations and public anxiety. Over the past month, more than 5,000 drone reports have been recorded across the Northeast. This has prompted the FBI, DHS, and FAA to deploy additional resources to address the mystery. While many sightings appear to involve routine commercial, private, or government air traffic misidentified as drones, concerns persist. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is calling for advanced detection technologies, like Robin Radar, and pushing Congress to establish a national drone registration system to better track drone operators. The issue escalated on Friday when drone activity forced the closure of runways at New York's Stewart Airfield. In Boston, two men were arrested for flying drones near Logan Airport, underscoring the dangers of unregulated drone activity. Compounding these incidents are reports of lasers being aimed at planes across New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas suggests that a recent FAA policy allowing nighttime drone flights may explain the surge in sightings. He assures the public that federal agencies are actively addressing the issue, but many residents remain concerned about potential risks to safety and security. Efforts to regulate drone activity continue, as lawmakers and officials push for measures to ensure accountability and prevent further disruptions.
