Luigi Mangioni Indicted for Terrorism-Linked Murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO

Luigi Mangioni has been formally indicted for the ambush murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City. The indictment includes charges of first-degree murder and second-degree murder, one linked to terrorism, along with multiple weapons violations. Prosecutors described the killing as a premeditated act of terror. According to the timeline presented, Mangioni left his hostel at 5:34 a.m. on an e-bike and reached Midtown Manhattan shortly after. From 5:52 to 6:45 a.m., he surveilled the area near the Hilton Hotel, where Thompson was attending a conference. Surveillance footage shows Mangioni loitering at a Starbucks and standing across the street with his hood up. At 6:45 a.m., he allegedly approached Thompson from behind and shot him. “This was a calculated, shocking act meant to intimidate,” prosecutors stated. Mangioni fled New York and was apprehended five days later at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania. Authorities found a 3D-printed ghost gun, a suppressor, two magazines, and multiple live cartridges in his possession. Sources confirm Mangioni will waive extradition at a Thursday hearing and face trial in New York. New York Police Commissioner Edward Caban condemned the killing and its aftermath. “In the weeks since Brian Thompson’s murder, celebrations of this heinous act have surfaced. Let me be clear—there is no heroism in what Mangioni did.” As Mangioni remains in custody, the case has drawn national attention, with prosecutors emphasizing the broader implications of such targeted violence.
