Traveling 9/11 Memorial Painting Arrives at Palm Desert Fire Station 33
The Traveling 9/11 Memorial: A Tribute to Heroes The Traveling 9/11 Memorial painting, a moving tribute to first responders and victims of September 11, 2001, has made its way to Fire Station 33 in Palm Desert. This remarkable piece of art, created by artist Kelly Lucas, captures the enduring spirit of resilience and gratitude. Originally delivered to Ground Zero to raise funds for the families of fallen firefighters, the painting continues to serve as a powerful reminder of sacrifice and unity. Wendy Mulau, a part-time Coachella Valley resident, purchased the painting at a fundraiser auction. When she brought it home, she realized it wasn’t meant to remain in her private collection. "This does not belong to me. It belongs to the public," she shared. Inspired, she launched the journey of the Traveling 9/11 Memorial, taking the painting to fire stations across the country as a way to honor and thank first responders. The painting’s journey began in Chicago, traveled through various fire stations in San Diego, and now finds its temporary home in the desert. "When you don’t have an emergency going on, how do you say we’re thinking about you, we care about you, and we appreciate you?" Mulau explained. "This is just one form that I came up with to give back." For firefighters, the painting resonates deeply. Palm Desert firefighter Patrick Lopez said, "It means a lot knowing that my coworkers go into those situations, not knowing if they’ll come out. It makes you appreciate those around you and the importance of this job." The memorial will remain at Fire Station 33 for three months before continuing its journey through the Coachella Valley. Eventually, it will return to New York City to be displayed at the 9/11 Memorial Museum, ensuring its message of remembrance and gratitude endures.
