Congress Scrambles to Avoid Government Shutdown as Deadline Looms
Congress is racing against the clock to avoid a government shutdown as the Friday midnight deadline looms. A bipartisan short-term funding bill that aimed to keep the government running until March 14th was unexpectedly thrown into chaos Wednesday when President-elect Trump voiced strong opposition, demanding a smaller price tag and fewer concessions to Democrats. Vice President-elect Vance joined Mr. Trump in criticizing the measure, urging Republicans to reject what they called “Democrat giveaways.” The move sent lawmakers back to the negotiating table, throwing plans into disarray. “We’re still having conversations with our members and other stakeholders to find a path forward,” said one GOP leader. Democrats, however, have condemned the last-minute objections, arguing the bipartisan agreement was already settled and warning of the consequences of a government shutdown during the holiday season. “An agreement is an agreement,” said a top Democratic leader. “If a shutdown happens, House Republicans will own the harm done to Americans.” The Friday deadline leaves little room for maneuvering, and failure to pass a funding measure could disrupt essential services nationwide. With tensions high and time running out, all eyes are on Capitol Hill to see if lawmakers can avert the impending crisis.
