Egg Shortage Hits Coachella Valley Bakers and Shoppers Before Christmas
With Christmas just two days away, many last-minute shoppers are scrambling to prepare for the holiday season, but one staple item is becoming increasingly scarce: eggs. Rising prices have created challenges for both consumers and local businesses that rely on this essential ingredient.
Egg prices have risen sharply, with reports indicating an increase of nearly $3 compared to earlier this year. This surge, compounded by the holiday season’s high demand, is creating challenges for shoppers and local bakery owners alike.
Tiffany's Sweet Spot in La Quinta has felt the strain. Owner Thorpe shared that egg prices have increased by 40% in the past month alone, significantly impacting their operations. “Our recipes use 40 eggs at a time. It’s tricky to find eggs, and when we do, they’re expensive,” he said. Despite the higher costs, Thorpe is reluctant to pass the burden onto customers, saying, “We haven’t raised our prices in a year, so we just have to find other ways to cut costs.”
Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency to address the situation, aiming to support state agencies and enhance preparedness. However, local businesses are urging the community to shop small and support local during this challenging time.
As egg availability continues to fluctuate, Coachella Valley businesses are adapting to these challenges. Supporting local establishments this holiday season can make a significant difference for the community.
