Pledge of Allegiance Day

Today, Americans across the country observe Pledge of Allegiance Day, a day that highlights one of the most enduring symbols of patriotism in the United States. The Pledge of Allegiance is recited in numerous settings, including schools, Congress, local and state government meetings, and large public events. It serves as a reminder of the nation's values and unity.

What many may not know is that for the first 100 years of the United States’ history, there was no official pledge. It wasn't until 1892 that Francis Bellamy, an editor and clergyman, wrote the first version of the Pledge for a school celebration. His words, initially meant as a patriotic exercise for schoolchildren, would eventually become ingrained in American culture.

However, it wasn’t until 1942 that Congress formally recognized the Pledge of Allegiance as a national tradition. Today, it remains a central part of American life, symbolizing devotion to the country, its ideals, and its flag. While the Pledge has evolved slightly over the years, its core message of unity and patriotism continues to resonate deeply with Americans from all walks of life.
