Desert Dunes Golf Course Closes Amid Financial Struggles, Land to Be Transformed into Nature Preserve
Desert Dunes Golf Course, a popular golfing destination located just off Highway 10 near Desert Hot Springs, has officially closed its doors. A post on the course's website revealed that the closure comes after a series of unfortunate events, including weather-related challenges, a collapsed well, and significant damage to the irrigation system. Despite investing in new golf carts and attempting various strategies to keep operations afloat, management ultimately faced insurmountable financial losses and was unable to maintain the property.
In a statement, the course's management explained that while they had hoped to keep Desert Dunes running, the ongoing operational struggles proved too difficult to overcome. The challenges, particularly with maintaining the watering system and dealing with extreme weather, made it impossible for the course to continue. With a heavy heart, they made the difficult decision to cease operations.
However, there is hope for the future of the land. The Oswit Land Trust, a local organization dedicated to land preservation, has now taken over the property. The trust plans to transform the 160-acre site into a permanent nature preserve. This shift aligns with the trust’s mission to protect local desert ecosystems and provide space for native plants and wildlife to thrive.
"We are excited to be able to care for the land and ensure it remains a vital part of our local natural heritage," said a spokesperson for the Oswit Land Trust. "The transformation of this land into a preserve will allow it to become a sanctuary for the desert’s unique flora and fauna."
The transition from a golf course to a nature preserve is a significant change for the local community, but it reflects growing trends toward conservation and sustainable land management in the region. As Desert Dunes Golf Course is remembered by many for its scenic views and challenging layout, its new role as a nature preserve will likely provide a different kind of value to both residents and wildlife for years to come.
For now, Desert Hot Springs residents and nature enthusiasts can look forward to a new chapter for the land as it becomes a lasting part of the region's environmental conservation efforts.
