Know Before You Go: Major Construction and Traffic Updates for the Week in the Valley

As the new year begins and more people return to their work routines, the CV Sync Traffic Management Center is here to keep you informed about what to expect on the roads this week. Kris Gunterson, Program Manager at the center, joins us live to provide valuable insights on ongoing construction projects and traffic patterns.

For this week, there aren’t any major disruptions, but it's always wise to plan ahead—especially if you’re returning to work for the first time in the new year. One key project to keep an eye on is the SR 111 Roadway Project in the Palm Springs area. This large-scale Caltrans initiative will span most of the year, aiming to improve several major roadways including Vista Chino, Gene Autry, East Palm Canyon, and part of North Palm Canyon.

The project will be carried out in segments and will involve significant roadwork in both directions. Workers will begin by repaving the outside lanes, then move to the middle lanes once the outer sections are completed. The method being used is called grind and overlay, where the top layer of the road is ground down and replaced with up to 2 inches of new asphalt.

Since this project is expected to take several months, residents and commuters are encouraged to stay informed. Regular updates will be available through social media and project-specific mailing lists. Additionally, mailers containing project details will be sent out to Palm Springs residents as part of their utility bills. This will ensure that local drivers are aware of upcoming changes.

For those driving through Palm Springs, it’s also essential to note that there will be temporary lane closures, and some of the major intersections may be impacted as work progresses. However, Caltrans is working closely with the Traffic Management Center to minimize disruptions and provide clear detour routes if necessary.

In addition to construction updates, be aware of Firebirds games taking place Wednesday evening, and Saturday and Sunday. While the events promise great entertainment, they may also increase traffic around the venue, particularly before and after the games. Plan accordingly if you are traveling near the area during those times.

Stay updated on traffic changes by following local social media channels or signing up for email alerts.
With these tips and information on the major projects in the area, you’ll be better equipped to avoid delays and navigate safely. We hope everyone has a smooth and safe commute this week!
