Winds Kick Up Dust and Dirt, Creating Hazy Skies Across the Coachella Valley
Coachella Valley residents are experiencing gusty winds that are not only raising dust and dirt but also causing hazy skies, as seen on the Agua Caliente Casino Cam View. While the sun is out, the air quality is impacted by the dust, with winds pushing through the area at speeds of up to 30 mph in places like Cabazon, Yucca Valley, and 29 Palms. In Palm Springs, gusts reached 29 mph earlier today. These winds, which are stronger than this morning, will continue to pick up strength as the day progresses and are expected to peak later this evening.
Today's temperatures are mild, with daytime highs in the 70s, surpassing the normal high of 70°F for the Coachella Valley. At the moment, areas like Desert Hot Springs are hovering around 69°F, with Palm Springs at 73°F. While the winds will ease on Friday, it remains dry with no rain in sight, continuing the drought conditions across Southern California. Radar shows clear skies, but the region is desperately in need of rain, which is nowhere to be found in the forecast.
Winds will be strongest across the high desert, foothills, and mountains. Areas like Desert Hot Springs will experience sustained winds of up to 30 mph, with gusts exceeding 40 mph. For those to the east, an air quality alert is in place due to the dust in the air, although it doesn’t directly include the Coachella Valley. Additionally, a Red Flag Warning is still in effect due to the dry conditions and gusty winds, which contribute to the risk of fire.
Looking ahead, Friday's forecast calls for milder, less gusty winds with temperatures in the low to mid-70s. Saturday will bring more sunshine with similar temperatures, offering a break from the strong winds. However, the region remains in a critical state, with no significant rain expected anytime soon. For now, Southern California residents will need to brace for dry conditions, haze, and continued gusty winds.
