RivCo DA Sets Up Hotline to Investigate Price Gouging
In response to the recent wildfires in the greater Los Angeles area, including the Palisades, Eaton, and Hurst fires, the DA’s Bureau of Investigation has set up a Consumer Protection Price Gouging Hotline. Residents who suspect price gouging can report it by calling the hotline at (888) 814-8450.
The hotline also accepts reports in Spanish. Alternatively, complaints can be filed online through the Bureau’s website or the California Attorney General’s Office at https://oag.ca.gov/contact/consumer-complaint-against-business-or-company
Price gouging refers to the illegal practice of raising prices for essential goods or services by more than 10% during a declared state of emergency. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for California on January 7, 2025, following the widespread fires in Southern California. Essential goods affected by price gouging include food, water, medicine, toiletries, emergency supplies, pet food, and lodging.
Under California law, price gougers face criminal prosecution, which can result in a maximum of one year in county jail and/or fines up to $10,000. Additionally, violators may face civil penalties, including fines of $5,000 per violation, restitution to the victims, and an order to cease the illegal activity.
The DA’s Bureau of Investigation encourages the public to report any suspicious pricing behavior to protect consumers during this emergency period.
