Living Pyramid at Sunnylands: A Stunning Blend of Art, Agriculture, and Sustainability

A new art installation at Sunnylands Center and Gardens in Rancho Mirage is captivating visitors by blending art, agriculture, and sustainability. Titled The Living Pyramid, this striking piece is part of DesertX 2025, an outdoor art exhibit celebrating the unique beauty of the Coachella Valley.

Created by renowned 94-year-old artist Agnes Denes, The Living Pyramid showcases rows of plants forming a towering structure that reaches toward the desert sky while being firmly rooted in the historic lawn of Sunnylands. The artwork reflects the cycle of life and death, as the plants grow, bloom, and eventually wither.

"This art is truly alive," said Nicolene Gallagher of Sunnylands. "I love that we get to see it change over the seasons." Visitors have been enthralled by the piece’s dynamic nature, as it evolves in harmony with its environment.

Neville Wakefield, DesertX art director, highlights Denes’ impact on land art. "Her work has changed how we perceive land art—emphasizing environmental sustainability and our connection with the planet."

The Living Pyramid is free to visit and will be on display throughout the season. It invites guests to reflect on the natural cycles of life while celebrating art that interacts meaningfully with the environment.

Stop by Sunnylands to experience this truly living masterpiece for yourself.
