Know Before You Go: Major SR-111 Construction Updates in Palm Springs
Know Before You Go: SR-111 Construction in Palm Springs to Last Through the Holidays
Palm Springs commuters, take note: significant construction on SR-111 is underway and will impact traffic flow throughout the city. The project, which includes East Palm Canyon Drive, Gene Autry Trail, and Vistachino, involves grinding and overlaying the road’s blacktop, as well as upgrading bus pads and access areas. The construction is expected to last until the holiday season this year.
Joining NBC Palm Springs’ Mary Strong on the "Know Before You Go" segment, Chris Gunterson, program manager at the CBC Traffic Management Center, explained the scope of the work. "They’re removing the top layer of blacktop and replacing it with fresh pavement," he said. Crews are starting with the outside lanes before moving to the inside lanes.
To stay ahead of traffic disruptions, Gunterson encouraged residents to sign up for real-time construction alerts through social media platforms or city traffic updates. "It’s a moving project," Gunterson emphasized, "so traffic control won’t be the same every day." His team actively monitors traffic patterns to mitigate delays and help drivers navigate the area.
The construction is already affecting major sections, including Olivo Road and Vistachino. Commuters are advised to allow extra travel time and remain vigilant for changing traffic conditions.
Gunterson also highlighted the importance of safe driving during construction. "Put your phone down while driving," he urged, sharing that even at stoplights, distractions can lead to accidents. Mary Strong applauded the initiative, committing to challenge others to adopt distraction-free driving habits.
As the SR-111 project progresses, updates will be shared on social media and in future "Know Before You Go" segments. For now, patience and preparedness are key for Palm Springs drivers.
