Barbara C. McClain Shares Her Inspiring Journey in Hop Skip Jump: An Immigrant’s Story
Barbara C. McClain’s Hop Skip Jump Chronicles a Unique Immigrant Experience
Barbara C. McClain, retired community college teacher and author, appeared on Desert Living to discuss her memoir, Hop Skip Jump: An Immigrant’s Story. The book captures McClain’s personal journey of emigrating from Guyana to England and then to the U.S., offering a fresh perspective on immigration.
Initially conceived as a family keepsake, McClain’s project grew into a published memoir at the encouragement of friends and colleagues. "I wanted to create a historical record, but as I shared my stories, I realized they could encourage and educate people about immigration experiences that differ from the ones often highlighted in media," McClain shared.
Unlike many immigrant narratives, McClain’s journey was a voluntary, formal process. "I chose to come to the U.S. I didn’t come under duress or peril, and that distinction shapes my story," she explained. Through her book, she hopes to connect with immigrants who can see pieces of their own experiences reflected in her words, while also broadening understanding for native-born readers.
McClain admitted to facing challenges when addressing sensitive topics, particularly her initial expectations and interactions with African Americans. She worked to balance honesty and humility, ensuring her reflections were both truthful and respectful.
Hop Skip Jump: An Immigrant’s Story is available on Amazon and through McClain’s website. She’s also active on Facebook and Instagram, where readers can connect with her.
McClain’s memoir is more than a personal tale—it’s an invitation to explore the richness of immigrant stories, challenge preconceived notions, and find shared humanity in diverse experiences.
