Indio’s Renaissance: Mayor Glenn Miller on the City’s Transformation
Indio, the oldest and largest city in the Coachella Valley, is undergoing a remarkable transformation. Mayor Glenn Miller joined NBC Palm Springs to discuss the city’s renaissance and its efforts to reclaim center stage in the region.
Driving through Indio, visitors will notice new signage and enhanced landscaping, part of a larger branding initiative. Mayor Miller explained that these updates are funded by a one-cent sales tax, a measure passed by residents to invest in the community. “We are investing back in our residents and our community,” Miller stated, highlighting projects like a new police station, fire station, city hall, and library.
This reinvestment is not only improving Indio’s image but also attracting new businesses and residents. The city’s focus is on sustainable and responsible growth. “Anything we put in the city, we make sure we can maintain it and meet the quality expectations of our residents,” Miller said.
Reflecting on the city’s history, Miller acknowledged that Indio was overlooked during the growth of neighboring cities like Palm Desert and Palm Springs. However, with strategic investments and a unified vision, Indio is now flourishing.
As for the future, Miller outlined a five-year plan prioritizing continued growth and high-quality developments. "We’re very fortunate to be in a great city with a great community,” Miller said. He even extended an invitation for visitors to experience Indio firsthand, promising lunch for those who visit.
Indio’s renaissance is well underway, and its residents and leaders are ensuring the city’s progress continues for years to come.
