California Highway Patrol Clarifies Confusion Over Bureau Of Automotive Repair Checks
Over the last two days, concerns about possible immigration checkpoints have circulated online. Today, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is working to clear up any confusion. According to CHP officials, these stops are actually part of the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) checks, designed to inspect vehicles for compliance with California's smog check program. The checkpoints, which CHP routinely assists with, are not related to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and do not involve asking about immigration status. These inspections are voluntary, and drivers are not required to provide any personal documentation. Residents concerned about the purpose of these stops are encouraged to visit the BAR website or contact their local CHP for more information. These roadside inspections are often random but occur several times a year, with the primary aim of ensuring vehicles meet California's environmental standards. CHP reassures the public that its officers focus on public safety and criminal activity.
