Desert X 2025 Artists Revealed: A Global Convergence of Art, History, and Environmental Consciousness

Desert X is set to return to the Coachella Valley in 2025 with a thrilling lineup of international and local artists, marking yet another chapter in the region's vibrant art scene. This year’s exhibition promises to transcend traditional art by exploring the Coachella Valley’s complex histories and ongoing environmental challenges. The 11 artists chosen for the event will tackle themes of displacement, sovereignty, and the human impact on the land, while using the desert landscape as a canvas for their creations.

Artistic Director Neville Wakefield and co-curator Kaitlin Garcia-Maestas, who previously confirmed Agnes Denes’ “The Living Pyramid,” have curated an eclectic mix of artists. Representing places as diverse as New York, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea, the exhibition will present a stunning array of works that reflect global and local issues.

Among the names announced are Sanford Biggers, whose “Unsui” examines nature’s relationship to human existence, and Alison Saar, with “Soul Service Station,” a piece that explores themes of spirituality and cultural identity. International artists like Jose Dávila, based in Guadalajara, and Muhannad Shono from Riyadh, will bring global perspectives on the environment and human connection. Meanwhile, local artists such as Ronald Rael will highlight regional themes like architecture and adaptation in the face of climate change.

The exhibition is set to be a feast for the eyes and the mind, with many works taking architectural forms as “visible evidence of transformative human presence,” according to the organizers. This focus on large-scale installations is especially significant in a place like the Coachella Valley, which has long been home to an interplay of natural beauty and human innovation.

Desert X 2025, as always, will be free for all to experience, making it accessible to everyone from art aficionados to local residents and visitors. As Jenny Gil, the exhibition’s executive director, noted, the artwork will inspire new ways of seeing and understanding the world around us—especially in a region grappling with complex environmental and cultural dynamics.

As the 100th anniversary of Route 66 approaches in 2026, the Coachella Valley’s art scene continues to thrive, drawing global attention and reaffirming its place on the map as a destination for contemporary art. For more information and updates, visitors can check out desertx.org.

This exhibition is not just a series of installations; it’s an invitation to reconsider our collective relationship with the land, and the stories we tell about our past, present, and future. Desert X 2025 will bring the global and local together in a powerful conversation, and the community is sure to feel the lasting impact for years to come.
