Palm Springs Celebrates Black History Month with a Month-Long Series of Events

Palm Springs is kicking off Black History Month with a month-long celebration honoring the rich culture, history, and accomplishments of the African American community. A variety of free events have been organized by the Palm Springs Black History Month Committee in collaboration with the City of Palm Springs and the Palm Springs Art Museum, offering something for everyone throughout the month of February.

The festivities began with the annual Gospel Fest on January 26, held at the Word of Life Fellowship Center in Desert Hot Springs. The afternoon featured uplifting gospel music, scripture readings, and prayers, with performances from local choirs across the Coachella Valley.

On February 1, the Palm Springs Black History Committee will host its 15th Annual Black History Awards Gala at the Hilton Palm Springs. The gala, which begins at 6:00 p.m. with cocktails and continues with dinner and awards, will recognize local individuals, organizations, and businesses that have contributed to the success and advancement of African Americans in the region.

Also on February 1, the Palm Springs Library will present the "Our Voices Our Stories: Celebrating Black Authors" speaking event. This event will begin at the Mizell Center at 10 a.m. and include lunch for the first 100 people who register, followed by discussions at the Palm Springs Public Library. The event will celebrate the work and influence of Black authors.

On February 6, the Palm Springs Art Museum will hold a Black History Month Kick-Off from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., featuring performances by the Palm Springs High School Choir and the Healing Rhythms West African Drum Circle. The event will also showcase a special mural by Allen Maldonado and explore exhibitions related to this year’s theme: “African Americans and Labor.”

On February 17, join the Palm Springs Black History Tour at 10:00 a.m., which will highlight untold histories and landmarks throughout the city, including historic buildings and mid-century modern architecture. Registration is required for this event.

The month will culminate with the 38th Annual Black History Parade & Town Fair on February 22. The parade will begin at 11:00 a.m. and be followed by a town fair from noon to 6:00 p.m. at the Downtown Park, offering food, entertainment, and community festivities.

Palm Springs’ commitment to honoring African American history is reflected in this extensive lineup of events. Whether you’re interested in history, art, music, or community celebrations, there’s something for everyone this February.
