Palm Springs Police to Hold DUI Checkpoint Tonight to Combat Impaired Driving

The Palm Springs Police Department is set to hold a DUI checkpoint tonight, aiming to prevent impaired driving and enhance traffic safety. The checkpoint will run from 7 p.m. on Friday evening until 2 a.m. overnight at a location within the city that has seen an elevated number of impaired driving-related crashes.

Sgt. Kevin Lu of the Palm Springs Police Department emphasized the importance of reducing impaired driving to ensure the safety of all road users. "Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," said Lu. "Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety."

Impaired driving isn't limited to alcohol consumption; it includes driving under the influence of marijuana, certain prescription medications, and over-the-counter drugs that can impair one's ability to drive safely.

For those caught driving under the influence, the consequences can be severe. A first-time DUI charge can result in approximately $13,500 in fines and penalties, according to the police department. In addition to financial costs, impaired drivers may also face a suspension of their driver's license.

The Palm Springs Police Department encourages all drivers to plan ahead and avoid driving if they are impaired.
