Poultry In Riverside County Tests Positive For Avian Influenza

The latest outbreak of Avian Influenza, commonly known as bird flu, has made its way to Riverside County, impacting local poultry and dairy farms. According to officials with the Riverside University Health System, 25 egg and dairy production facilities, including one backyard coop, have been affected by the virus. While the overall risk to human health remains low, the economic impact is already being felt at grocery stores, with egg prices soaring and availability dwindling.

For residents like Cindy and Leona of La Quinta, the rising cost of eggs is taking a toll on their budgets. “$39 for a five-dozen box of eggs is ridiculous,” Cindy says. Many stores have started imposing purchase limits, making it even more difficult for consumers to stock up. The USDA attributes the rising costs to supply shortages caused by the outbreak, which has spread across multiple states.

Despite the financial strain, experts assure the public that farm owners are taking necessary precautions to prevent further spread. “They are doing their best to manage things in a way that is safe and best for the public,” one health official stated. Safety recommendations include frequent handwashing, wearing protective gear, and minimizing direct exposure to infected animals. Additionally, consumers are urged to handle eggs with care, ensuring they are fully cooked before consumption and opting for pasteurized dairy products when possible.

With egg prices unlikely to drop in the near future, the bird flu outbreak continues to highlight vulnerabilities in the food supply chain, leaving many Riverside County residents struggling to adjust. Further updates on the outbreak and safety recommendations can be found on the county’s website.
