Supervisor Perez to Update Public on Animal Shelter Reform Efforts in Special Meeting

Supervisor V. Manuel Perez will convene a special meeting tomorrow to update the public on the ongoing efforts to reform Riverside County’s Animal Services Department. The meeting will focus on the progress made by animal shelter consultant Kristen Hassen, who was hired to lead the reform initiatives following the firing of former director Erin Gettis. Gettis' dismissal followed an investigation into allegations of mistreatment of animals and high euthanasia rates at the county's shelters.

During the meeting, Perez will outline the department's 30, 60, and 90-day plans to address these issues, along with a breakdown of the $2.5 million contract with Hassen and how it will be allocated. The public will be able to learn about the specific steps being taken to improve the department’s operations and ensure animal welfare.

The meeting will take place from 9 to 11 AM at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms, with all members of the public encouraged to attend. Additionally, the regular Coachella Valley Animal Commission meeting is still scheduled for this Thursday at 9:30 AM, which will also be open to the public for participation. These meetings provide an important opportunity for community members to stay informed on the progress of critical animal welfare reforms in Riverside County.
