Desert Winds Freedom Band Brings Music, Community, and Celebration to the Coachella Valley
Desert Winds Freedom Band: Celebrating Music and Community in the Coachella Valley
The Desert Entertainment spotlight shines on the Desert Winds Freedom Band, the Coachella Valley’s only community band, dedicated to music, inclusivity, and outreach. Artistic Director Dean McDowell shares the band's journey, its impact on the community, and upcoming performances.
Founded by Gary Moline, a former member of San Francisco’s pioneering LGBTQ+ band, the Desert Winds Freedom Band has grown from 18 members to over 130 musicians. The band welcomes all, with about a third of its members identifying as allies. Beyond performances, they actively support local schools by funding music programs and hosting workshops with professional composers.
This Sunday, Feb. 9, the band's jazz ensemble takes center stage at the Cascade Lounge in Palm Springs for an annual fundraiser. The event features a Sunday brunch, live jazz, and a silent auction, raising vital funds to sustain the band’s programming. Tickets are selling fast and can be purchased at desertwindsfb.org.
Looking ahead, the full symphonic band will perform American Panorama on March 29-30 at Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs. This concert will showcase music inspired by American landscapes, celebrating the nation’s diverse beauty.
With a dedicated roster of volunteer musicians ranging from ages 15 to 87, the Desert Winds Freedom Band remains a pillar of musical excellence and community spirit.
