Trump and Musk Push for Federal Overhaul, Possible End to Education Department
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Trump administration may soon issue an executive order to abolish the U.S. Department of Education, according to sources familiar with the plan. This move comes as billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk, leading the Department of Government Efficiency—a non-governmental entity—continues to exert significant influence in reshaping federal agencies.
Musk, who vowed to cut $2 trillion from the budget, has already implemented aggressive cost-saving initiatives, including buyouts that have led to more than 20,000 federal employees leaving their jobs. His team has also gained access to sensitive government data systems in an effort to track inefficiencies.
President Trump has praised Musk’s efforts, particularly his push to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which oversees over $40 billion in foreign aid. “Money is going to all sorts of groups that shouldn’t deserve to get any,” Trump stated.
However, the rapid restructuring has sparked backlash from both federal employees and Democratic leaders, who argue that Musk’s unelected influence is undermining the integrity of public institutions. “Being innovative is good. But Mr. Musk, this isn’t a tech startup,” a top Democrat warned.
Despite criticism, Republican leaders support Musk’s initiatives, calling them necessary to restore “fiscal sanity” in Washington. With sweeping federal changes underway, the potential elimination of the Department of Education would mark one of the administration’s most drastic moves yet.
