Desi Strong Foundation Hosts Record-Breaking 5K to Support Kids Fighting Cancer

Each year, thousands of children are diagnosed with cancer, and for many families, the battle is both emotionally and financially devastating. The Desi Strong Foundation, a nonprofit based in the Coachella Valley, is dedicated to easing that burden. Over the weekend, the foundation hosted its seventh annual, Run Walk for Kids at Rancho Mirage Community Park, bringing together community members for a cause close to many hearts.

With a record-breaking 130 runners participating, the event raised vital funds to support families dealing with childhood cancer. Jessica Bowser, Vice President of the Desi Strong Foundation, emphasized the importance of the cause. “Seeing someone fight cancer is hard, but when you see a child fighting cancer, you have never seen strength like that before,” she said.

The foundation was inspired by Desi, a young girl diagnosed with cancer at just four years old. Despite her illness, Desi was known for her infectious laughter and unbreakable spirit. Her best friend, Michaela McWhorter, fondly remembered her, saying, “She was really brave and she was really funny. She had so many jokes and always made everyone laugh.”

To continue Desi’s legacy, the foundation provides gas cards, food cards, and other essentials to families struggling with the financial toll of cancer treatments. They also offer support around the holidays, ensuring that no child fights alone.

For those who missed the event, the foundation encourages donations and support through their website, desistrong.org. “Every share, every donation makes a difference,” Bowser said. “Together, we can keep Desi’s spirit alive and help these brave children in their fight.”
