Desert Hot Springs Recreation Center Becomes a Certified Autism Center

The City of Desert Hot Springs has made a significant step towards inclusivity by officially certifying its Recreation Center as an autism-friendly space. This certification, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), ensures that the center is equipped to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities.

In alignment with this new designation, Desert Hot Springs has focused on staff training, with over 80% of its recreation center team now certified in supporting children and adults on the autism spectrum. The center's efforts are aimed at creating a space where everyone, regardless of developmental background, feels welcome and able to participate in activities. The staff has expressed excitement about being trained to better understand the needs of students and provide the right support for all participants.

By receiving this certification, Desert Hot Springs joins an expanding network of autism-friendly venues across the Coachella Valley, further solidifying its commitment to inclusion. This initiative is part of a broader movement that seeks to ensure all community members, especially those with autism, have access to spaces that cater to their specific needs.

The city celebrates this achievement as a step toward building a more inclusive community, recognizing the value of providing tailored opportunities for children of all learning backgrounds and developmental stages. Desert Hot Springs hopes its example will inspire other areas to take similar steps in promoting inclusivity and support for individuals with autism.
