Developer Suspends 3 New Geothermal Plants Near the Salton Sea
In a significant setback for the Salton Sea region, BHE Renewables has announced the suspension of 3 proposed geothermal projects near the south end of the Salton Sea. The company had been in the process of obtaining permits for three projects, but cited delays in timelines and obstacles related to transmission infrastructure as the reasons behind the pause. Speaking with NBC Palm Springs, BHE Renewables clarified that this project suspension is only related to three new proposed geothermal plants in the area and does not impact the existing plants already operating. Its effect on the growing Lithium extraction in the area is unclear since while Lithium is extracted from geothermal plants, it had not yet been determined if these plants would be involved in lithium extraction upon their completion.
The news was met with disappointment by local officials, with Imperial County's executive office calling it "undoubtedly disheartening."
The projects had been highly anticipated, with projections suggesting they could create over 1,500 jobs and generate more than $3 billion in economic benefits over the next 30 years. The development of Lithium Valley, which aims to harness the region's geothermal energy and lithium resources, is seen as a potential economic boon for Imperial County, already known for its proximity to the Salton Sea.
Despite the challenges facing the projects, officials remain hopeful that efforts to develop Lithium Valley will continue. However, the recent suspension raises concerns about the future of this ambitious initiative. As transmission issues and delays continue to affect the pace of development, the community and stakeholders are left wondering what comes next.
NBC Palm Springs will continue its in-depth coverage of this important issue, with the special report Restoring the Salton Sea, Part 3 set to air soon, examining the potential of Lithium Valley and its impact on the region’s future.
