California Healthcare Workers Rally in D.C. Against Proposed Medi-Cal Cuts

Dozens of healthcare workers from Riverside County and across California took their concerns to Washington, D.C. last week, advocating against proposed Medi-Cal budget cuts they say would devastate patient access to basic care.

Speaking with NBC Palm Springs’ Antonio Marquez, healthcare workers described how the cuts could force patients to delay treatment until emergencies arise. "A lot of people hold back from going to the ER until the last minute because they can’t afford hospital bills," one worker explained.

Advocates fear thousands of families in Congressman Ken Calvert’s district could lose crucial medical services, especially affecting low-income residents and seniors. One healthcare worker shared her father’s struggle: "He’s diabetic and needs knee surgery. If Medicaid is cut, how will he afford it?"

When asked about his stance, Calvert’s office said Republicans aim to extend middle-class tax cuts through budget reconciliation and emphasized that Social Security and Medicare benefits won’t be affected.

Healthcare workers vowed to continue their fight to protect community health. "We shared our stories hoping lawmakers understand the real-life consequences," one participant said.

Stay with NBC Palm Springs for updates on the proposed cuts and their potential impact on local families.
