$197,000 Grant Awarded to Desert Healthcare District and Foundation

The Desert Healthcare District and Foundation has recently been awarded a $197,000 grant, a significant boost to their mission of advancing wellness and providing essential healthcare services in the Coachella Valley. The grant, presented by the Inland SoCal United Way, aims to address the lasting impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and offer vital resources to residents in need. Reporter Brett Rosen spoke with the CEO on how this grant will be used in the future. According to Chris Christensen, despite the decline in pandemic-related cases, COVID-19’s lingering effects on the community remain a critical concern.

“The virus continues to mutate, and its long-term effects continue to impact people’s health,” Christensen explained. “It's crucial that we help residents access both the education and care they need to manage these ongoing challenges.”

The funding, which was awarded after a thorough application process that involved providing detailed budgets and work plans, will be used to educate the community about the ongoing risks and long-term consequences of COVID-19. Moreover, the Desert Healthcare District plans to utilize this grant to expand access to medical services that cater to those who are suffering from the lasting effects of the virus.

Christensen emphasized the importance of understanding COVID-19’s evolving impact, highlighting that five years since its emergence, the virus continues to affect individuals in various ways.

"The goal is to provide the resources necessary to ensure that residents of all backgrounds and income levels can access the care they need, regardless of the changes in the virus," he said.

The Desert Healthcare District's grant award will not only help mitigate the health disparities that arose during the height of the pandemic but will also ensure that the community has the support it needs as it continues to recover. For more information tune into NBC Palm Springs.
