Palm Springs Launches Community Behavioral Assessment Team
The Palm Springs Police Department has introduced a new initiative, the Community Behavioral Assessment Team (CBAT), aimed at addressing mental health and substance abuse emergencies with a compassionate approach. The team is made up of Officer Joshua Crocker and licensed behavioral health specialist Rita Romero, who work together to provide long-term solutions for individuals facing these challenges. The CBAT team responds to calls related to mental health and drug-related crises with the goal of creating a less intrusive, more supportive method of intervention.
Our Caitlyn Kelley recently met with members of the department to learn more about the partnership behind the CBAT program. The team emphasizes building rapport and trust with individuals in crisis, ensuring they feel in control of their situation while receiving help. Police Chief Andy Mills highlighted the importance of collaboration between the police department, mental health professionals, and county behavioral health teams in making the program successful. The goal is to prevent repeated crises by providing lasting solutions to individuals in need of help.
Though the program is currently in its early stages, the department is hopeful for its future growth. The CBAT team plans to expand its reach, offering more comprehensive support not only to Palm Springs but also to surrounding areas. The success of this program could serve as a model for other cities to adopt similar community-based crisis intervention approaches.
