Gov. Gavin Newsom Orders Risk Assessment in Menendez Brothers’ Parole Bid

The Menendez brothers’ bid for parole is gaining attention as California Governor Gavin Newsom takes action, calling for a risk assessment by the state parole board.

Newsom revealed the decision on his new podcast, explaining that the board must determine whether Eric and Lyle Menendez pose an “unreasonable risk to public safety” after spending 35 years behind bars for the 1990 murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home.

The request is part of the brothers’ appeal for clemency, one of three legal paths they are pursuing in hopes of reducing their life sentences. However, L.A. District Attorney officials remain opposed, questioning the credibility of new evidence the brothers say supports their claims of long-term abuse by their father.

Family members supporting the Menendez brothers celebrated Newsom’s announcement, while legal experts say the case still faces major hurdles. The final decision on resentencing, another potential avenue for release, remains under review.
