New Rail Transit System Could Connect Coachella Valley to Riverside

The City of Coachella is moving forward with plans for a new rail transit system that would connect the Coachella Valley to Riverside, thanks to a planning grant from the Riverside County Transportation Commission.

For many, the new rail system would provide a cheaper, quicker, and more convenient alternative to buses. Ruben Martinez, a traveler who took a Greyhound bus from Yuma, Arizona to visit his grandmother in the valley, described his mixed experiences with bus travel and emphasized the need for a more reliable transit system.

Coachella’s Mayor, along with other city officials, sees the project as a major step forward in mobility. “You’re going to be able to get on the train and get back into Riverside in just over an hour. It’s cost-effective, offers a smoother ride, and eliminates the hassle of driving in traffic,” the mayor explained.

The proposed system would include stops in Indio, Palm Desert, and Palm Springs, with Coachella and Riverside as the endpoints. Officials say the project is still in its early planning stages, with a 10-year timeline for completion.
