The Roggin Report Big Story

The Living Desert Plans New Lion Habitat for the Future of Conservation

The Living Desert, widely considered one of the best zoos in the world, is setting its sights on the future with a groundbreaking expansion. CEO Allen Monroe joined The Roggin Report to discuss plans for a new lion habitat designed to elevate conservation efforts and redefine how zoos operate.

“Zoos have evolved,” Monroe explained. “We’re no longer just places to observe animals; we’re conservation organizations committed to protecting species for the future.”

The Living Desert’s next major project is the Lion Ridge Habitat, an expansive, carefully designed space aimed at educating visitors about the plight of lions. With fewer than 20,000 lions left in Africa, conservationists fear free-roaming lions could disappear within a generation. The new habitat seeks to raise awareness and support for their survival.

This project has been years in the making, involving over 30 consultants meticulously planning every aspect of the habitat—from its structure to the well-being of the animals. “Every nut, bolt, and branch is designed to ensure the best possible environment for these lions for the next 50 years,” Monroe said.

The habitat will begin with three to four lions, all sourced from other accredited zoos rather than the wild. “It’s like a mix of Ancestry.com and Tinder for lions,” Monroe joked, referring to the matchmaking system that ensures proper genetic diversity in zoo populations.

The unique design will include three interconnected habitats, allowing for flexible arrangements—whether for a growing pride, a mother with cubs, or senior lions needing a separate space. This forward-thinking approach ensures the habitat can adapt over time, providing a home for generations of lions to come.

With its dedication to conservation and innovation, The Living Desert continues to set the standard for zoos worldwide. The new lion habitat is expected to open within the next three years, further cementing the Coachella Valley landmark as a leader in wildlife preservation.
