Big Bear’s Eagle Family Expands with the Birth of Two Eaglets

Big Bear Valley is buzzing with excitement as two adorable eaglets hatched just within hours of each other. Jackie and Shadow, the iconic eagle parents, have welcomed their new additions to the nest, much to the delight of their many followers.

The first eaglet hatched at 11:29 p.m. last night, and the second arrived early this morning at 4:29 a.m. The eagle cam has been capturing every moment, showing viewers the tiny, yet determined eaglets moving around in the nest. The third egg, which is still waiting to hatch, is being closely monitored by eagle experts like Sandy Steers, who reassures that there’s plenty of time for it to break open.

Steers notes that it takes about 10 to 14 weeks for the eaglets to reach their full size and prepare for flight. During this time, the little ones will engage in what’s called "winger sizing," flapping their wings in practice for their first flight. Once they leave the nest, they will return to Jackie and Shadow for a couple of months to continue learning and being fed, before becoming independent.

As the eaglets grow, they’ll also face the natural challenges of wildlife. When the next nesting season rolls around, the young eagles will be considered intruders, as Jackie and Shadow will have to protect the new eggs and chicks.

The bond between Jackie and Shadow and the captivating nature of their story have captured the hearts of many, and it’s clear that the world has fallen in love with this beautiful eagle family. For those who want to support the ongoing eagle cam, donations can be made through Friends of Big Bear Valley.
