House Votes to Censure Rep. Al Green for Disrupting Trump’s Address
The House of Representatives voted Thursday morning to formally censure Rep. Al Green after his disruption of President Trump’s address to Congress on Tuesday night.
The Republican-controlled chamber passed the resolution 224-198, with ten Democrats siding with Republicans. Green himself voted present.
During the proceedings, Speaker Mike Johnson read the censure as Green stood with members of the Congressional Black Caucus, who began singing "We Shall Overcome." Johnson repeatedly attempted to restore order before eventually calling the House into recess.
Green, who represents parts of Houston, Texas, was removed from the House chamber Tuesday night after interrupting Trump's speech by shouting, standing, and shaking his cane.
A censure is a formal expression of disapproval by the House but does not remove any rights or privileges from the member being censured.
