Hunter Lopez's Family Receives News of Terrorist’s Capture from President

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump revealed that Mohammad Sharifullah, a member of the ISIS terrorist group responsible for the 2021 Abbey Gate bombing, has been captured. The bombing, which took place more than three years ago during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, killed 13 American service members, including Marine Corporal Hunter Lopez, a Coachella Valley native.

The attack left many questions unanswered for the families of the victims, who, until now, had been waiting for justice. President Trump personally notified the families of the fallen service members, including Lopez’s parents, Alicia and Herman Lopez, about the capture of Sharifullah. During a conversation, Hunter’s parents expressed their mixed emotions, including gratitude for the president's efforts to hold those responsible accountable.

“They’ve been working with the Pakistani government and have now apprehended the individual responsible,” said Hunter’s parents in an interview following the announcement. “We were just taken aback. Of course, we had questions, but the overwhelming feeling was gratitude.”

While the news provided a sense of closure, it did not erase the deep loss they feel. As Hunter’s mother stated, “Nothing that anyone can do will bring our loved one back, but knowing there’s accountability helps.” The Lopez family also emphasized the importance of recognizing the sacrifices of Gold Star families and ensuring that their loved ones' contributions are never forgotten.
