The “Birds Aren’t Real” Conspiracy: A Joke That Took Flight

For the past couple of days, we’ve been diving into conspiracy theories—why people create them and why they take hold. Some are fun, some are wild, and some make you scratch your head.

One of the most bizarre? The idea that birds aren’t real. Yes, you heard that right. The theory claims that birds were secretly replaced by government drones to spy on us. It started as satire, but somehow, it took off—literally.

Viewers like Patty and George chimed in, reminding us that “Birds Aren’t Real” was originally a joke. Patty wrote, “I may have missed the full discussion tonight about the Birds Aren’t Real conspiracy theory, but I just want to make sure you know this theory is satire created in 2017 to shine the light on conspiracy lunacy. Thanks. I love the show.” George added, “Birds Aren’t Real is a satire meant to poke fun at conspiracy theories. Now we’re all in on the joke. Thanks for the moment of levity.”

So, how did this all start? Back in 2017, psychology student Peter McIndoe attended a rally and held up a sign that read, “Birds Aren’t Real.” It was meant as a prank, mocking how easily misinformation spreads. The joke went viral, and before long, people started taking it seriously. Even though McIndoe has repeatedly stated that it was fake, the theory still has true believers in 2025.

It’s a reminder that once a conspiracy takes flight, it’s hard to bring it back down to earth. And yes, those people who truly believe it? They live among us.
