CAL FIRE Reminds Drivers to Pull to the Right for Emergency Vehicles

First responders in Riverside County are reminding drivers of a simple but crucial action that could save lives—pulling to the right when emergency vehicles are approaching with sirens and flashing lights.

Battalion Chief Matthew Coates of CAL FIRE Riverside County Fire emphasized the urgency of the Pull to the Right campaign.

“It’s very important to pull over because we want to make sure that we can get to the emergency quickly,” said Coates. “When you see fire trucks or ambulances with lights and sirens on, pull to the right, stop, let us go by, and then continue when it is safe to do so.”

Failure to yield to emergency vehicles is not only dangerous but also illegal. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is working alongside CAL FIRE to enforce the law, and drivers who do not move over could face a citation.

“It could be the difference between life and death,” Coates added. “When someone calls 911, we respond as quickly and safely as possible. While it may not be your emergency, it’s someone else’s, and one day it could be yours.”

First responders are asking drivers to stay alert, listen for sirens, and always be prepared to pull over when necessary.
