Coachella Councilwoman Faces Calls for Resignation After Husband’s Detainment

The detainment of Coachella City Councilwoman Yadira Perez’s husband, Isidro Jimenez, has sparked division in the community, with residents clashing over whether Perez should resign. The heated debate unfolded at Wednesday’s Coachella City Council meeting, where both criticism and support were voiced.

Jimenez was taken into custody by FBI and ICE agents due to charges related to prior deportation and criminal convictions. Some residents argue that Perez’s lack of transparency makes her unfit for office, further criticizing her role in the controversial dismissal of former city manager Gabriel Martin.

"You turned out and you fired, along with Denise, along with Frank, our city manager. Still to this day, you guys have not given us a reason," one resident stated during public comments.

On the other hand, many community members rallied behind Perez, stating that her husband’s legal issues should not affect her position. In written statements submitted to the council, supporters pointed out that other elected officials have faced similar personal challenges.

Councilwoman Perez addressed the controversy directly, acknowledging the hardship of family separations while reaffirming her commitment to her role.

"For those who want me to resign, I'm going to continue to be here," she stated.

As of now, the Coachella City Council has not made any decisions regarding Perez’s position. NBC Palm Springs has reached out to city officials for comment but has not received a response.
